Description

One of the most urgent issues facing democracies today is the spread of misinformation and disinformation. The ability to discern true from false, and reliable from unreliable, is an essential skill of citizenship in the digital age. Learn the tips and tricks for fact-checking and verifying sources that you can bring back to your classroom and empower your students to be informed citizens.

In preparation for the spring provincial election, listen to experts and journalists share their insights relating to the parties and campaign strategies, and participate in small group discussions with other teachers to speak about useful tools and best practices for Student Vote.

Teachers will leave the day ready to challenge their students into thinking about politics, news consumption and participating in Student Vote Alberta 2019.

CIVIX is a non-partisan, national registered charity dedicated to strengthening democracy through experiential civic education.

Since 2003, CIVIX has provided experiential learning opportunities to help millions of school-aged youth develop the habits of active and engaged citizenship.

We create classroom resources and training opportunities that empower educators to take real-life political events and turn them into teachable moments. CIVIX programming introduces students to the concepts of democracy and elections, improves awareness about government and role of elected representatives, and teaches students how to effectively participate as informed and responsible citizens in their community.
